The purpose of this study is to find out whether electrical stimulation can reduce knee pain and increase function in people with osteoarthritis of the knee.

20–30 minute sessions: 3x/week for 3 weeks, 2x/week for 3 weeks, 1x/week for 2 weeks
Other Name: Noninvasive Interactive Neurostimulation
Placebo Comparator Device: OrthoStim Mettler Bioelectric Stimulator
Same schedule as experimental group

Outcome Measures

Primary: Knee Pain (Baseline, Week 4, Week 8, Week 12)

Secondary:

  • Knee function
  • Knee stiffness
  • Patient global assessment
  • Health-related quality of life

Eligibility Criteria

Ages: 50 years and older

Sex: All

Healthy volunteers: No

Inclusion Criteria:

  • 50 years of age or older
  • Diagnosis of primary osteoarthritis of the knee
  • Knee pain ≥ 6 months
  • Moderate or greater pain
  • Willing to follow protocol

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Implants incompatible with electrical stimulation
  • Other inflammatory joint diseases
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Recent injections or surgery
  • Significant knee injury or other interfering conditions
