Patent application describes precision bioelectric approaches intended to modulate astrocytes, microglia and oligodendrocyte-lineage cells involved in neuroprotection, synaptic support, inflammation control, debris clearance and myelin repair

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. — September 6, 2026 — Leonhardt Ventures LLC and Lionheart Health, Inc. today announced the filing of a new provisional patent application covering bioelectric-stimulation systems and methods intended to support and modulate glial cells involved in maintaining, protecting and repairing the brain and central nervous system.
Once viewed primarily as passive structural support for neurons, glial cells are now understood to be active participants in brain function, immune regulation, metabolic support, synaptic remodeling, blood-brain barrier maintenance, debris clearance and the response to neurological injury.
The provisional patent application covers potential noninvasive, minimally invasive, wearable and implantable bioelectric approaches designed to influence glial-cell signaling and help create a more favorable environment for neural protection and recovery.
“Neurons do not repair or function in isolation. They depend upon an extraordinary community of glial cells that protect them, nourish them, regulate their connections, remove debris and help rebuild the environment surrounding damaged neural circuits,” said Howard J. Leonhardt, founder of Leonhardt Ventures and Executive Chairman and Co-CEO of Lionheart Health. “Our new provisional patent application is directed toward using precise bioelectric signaling to support these natural cellular systems and potentially unlock more of the brain’s latent repair capacity.”
Glial Cells: Active Partners in Brain Health
Glia include several specialized cell populations with distinct but interconnected roles.
Astrocytes
Astrocytes help:
- Maintain the chemical environment required for neuronal signaling
- Regulate neurotransmitter concentrations
- Provide metabolic and energy support to neurons
- Maintain blood-brain barrier function
- Regulate cerebral blood flow and neurovascular coupling
- Support synapse formation, maturation and function
- Release neurotrophic and growth-supporting factors
- Influence inflammation and immune signaling
- Limit the spread of injury through formation of protective tissue boundaries
- Support neural-network remodeling following injury
Astrocytes can produce both protective and harmful responses depending upon the injury, timing and molecular environment. The goal of the patent-covered approach is therefore controlled modulation—not indiscriminate activation.
Microglia
Microglia are the brain’s resident immune-surveillance cells. Their functions include:
- Detecting tissue injury, infection and abnormal cellular activity
- Clearing dead cells, damaged tissue and molecular debris
- Removing or remodeling dysfunctional synapses
- Releasing signaling molecules that coordinate repair
- Interacting with astrocytes, neurons and oligodendrocytes
- Regulating inflammatory and anti-inflammatory responses
- Supporting synaptic plasticity and circuit remodeling
- Helping protect viable neurons following injury
Microglia may adopt different functional states across the course of injury and recovery. Some responses may be protective, while prolonged or poorly regulated activation can contribute to chronic neuroinflammation and degeneration. This dual role makes the timing, intensity and sequence of bioelectric stimulation important development considerations. (nature.com, pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)
Oligodendrocytes and Oligodendrocyte Progenitor Cells
Oligodendrocytes produce myelin, the insulating material surrounding many neuronal axons. Myelin enables efficient signal transmission and provides important metabolic support to neurons.
Oligodendrocyte progenitor cells may contribute to:
- Generation of new oligodendrocytes
- Replacement of damaged myelin-producing cells
- Repair of demyelinated axons
- Restoration of more efficient neural signaling
- Maintenance of white-matter integrity
- Support of functional neural connectivity
Animal research indicates that electrical or activity-based stimulation can influence oligodendrocyte development, adaptive myelination and remyelination. These findings support further investigation but do not yet establish clinical effectiveness in humans. (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)
Scientific Foundation for Bioelectric Modulation
Preclinical research has demonstrated that glial responses can be influenced by electrical and electromagnetic stimulation.
In a rodent traumatic-brain-injury study, brief electrical stimulation was associated with an increased relative abundance of anti-inflammatory microglia, neural stem cells and Nestin-positive astrocytes, together with enhanced cortical-neuron viability. The researchers characterized the findings as support for further investigation—not proof of effectiveness in patients. (onlinelibrary.wiley.com, pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)
Other preclinical studies have reported that applied electric fields can influence neural-precursor-cell migration, expand precursor-cell populations and affect neurogenesis. Electrical activity has also been associated with oligodendrocyte maturation, myelin formation and remyelination in laboratory and animal models. (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov, pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)
These findings suggest that bioelectric stimulation could eventually become a tool for coordinating multiple components of neural repair rather than focusing exclusively on a single molecule, cell type or inflammatory pathway.

Beyond Inflammation Suppression
Many conventional approaches to brain injury focus on controlling swelling, inflammation or secondary damage. The Leonhardt Ventures and Lionheart Health development strategy seeks to investigate a complementary concept: supporting the brain’s own coordinated repair environment.
That environment may require carefully timed interactions among neurons, microglia, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, neural progenitor cells, vascular cells and circulating regenerative factors.
“Glial cells can protect or damage neural tissue depending on their state, location and timing,” Leonhardt said. “The objective is not simply to increase glial activation. It is to develop precise signal sequences intended to encourage protective, restorative and regenerative functions while avoiding prolonged inflammatory activity.”
Development and Regulatory Pathway
Leonhardt Ventures and Lionheart Health plan to advance the intellectual property through laboratory signal validation, cell-culture testing and appropriate preclinical models. Future development may include evaluation of:
